Welcome to IMC 617 with April - Late Fall Begins

Hi there! My name is April Ondis, and I?m going to do my best to pick up the IMC Blog where Todd left off. Todd, I really appreciate the time you took to blog about your ?IMC life? and for anticipating and answering the questions of lots of people (like me). I also want to thank you for sharing some great insights about the program.

This term I?m enrolled in the section of IMC 617 ? Sales Promotion taught by Dr. Lee. Truthfully, I?m very excited to be able to share my class experience in this blog. Chad Mezera, the IMC Program Coordinator, asked me to be completely honest about my experience with you. The school wants to give prospective IMC students – and new students – a realistic idea of what to expect from this class. And that?s exactly what I?m going to do!

Here?s a little about me: I live and work in Rhode Island, where I’m the Worldwide Marketing Manager for a small manufacturer that develops, manufactures, and sells industrial label printers. We have a small in-house communications group, and do a little of everything: advertising, research, public relations, and product development. I travel about every month or so, and I absolutely love being in an online program because I never have to worry about being out of town or out of the time zone (except Mondays and Wednesdays!). This is my seventh class in the IMC program. I?ve been taking classes one-at-a-time, and I?m starting to feel like I?m making progress!

I?m married to my husband of three years, Alex, who is also in graduate school. His school is full-time and in-person, and it?s an hour and a half away from us in Boston (40 minutes without traffic!). So, we don?t see each other as often as I?d like. I keep reminding myself that Alex and I will both be done in the spring of 2009 and it will be all feasting and fun after that. :-) In the meantime, when we do have free time, Alex and I like to spend time babysitting our 5-year old nephew Aidan and hanging out with his mom, my sister Alexis.

Hi April,

I look forward to reading your posts about 617. I haven’t taken that class yet! Rest assured I’ll keep adding my two cents worth!

Hi Anne,

That’s so cool of you to come by and comment. I’m sure you know how much I appreciate it since you are the original IMC blogger! ;-) I hope you’re having a good Late Fall!

April,
It’s great to be in 617 with you and to get to interact in class after meeting you at an IMC weekend. I think you will find the blog a lot of fun! I’ll submit the first “Ask April” question. At some point this term, would you blog a little about your experiences at IMC weekend and its value to prospective and current students? I attended my first IMC weekend as a current student, and I am interested in the perspective of prospective students at the event. How did your attendance help influence you to enroll in the program? Thanks! “See” you in class!
Todd

Hey Todd,

Thanks for the comment! I’m so excited we had a chance to be in class together. I was afraid you’d graduate before we had the chance! You have a great idea to blog about the IMC Weekend – I found it so much fun and so valuable when I was looking into the program and also as a current student. I’ll definitely blog about it, I hope you’ll comment on your experiences too!

April—

I enjoyed having 615 with you in the early Fall term and I am looking forward to reading your blog during the coming months.

Upon reading your first post, I remembered that I actually met you and your husband during the IMC weekend in 2006, before we were both students (I believe).

I’ll submit an “Ask April” question, as well—

In our 615 class last term, we discussed the need for account planning course. Do you (or other blog readers out there) see the need for any additional courses in the IMC curriculum? This might be a particularly helpful discussion since Prof. Stump sent out an e-mail notice about the upcoming faculty retreat.

Best of luck to you this term in Sales Promotion and with the blog!

Take care, Ashley

Hi April—

I’ve had fun following Anne’s and Todd’s blogs, and now I’ll enjoy following yours.

You are a worldwide marketing manager. Would you mind sharing some thoughts about how to think on a global marketing level? I know for me, my work is on a local/regional level, so I don’t often think about marketing activities on a national or global level. Any insights would be great!

Thanks!

Heidi

Hey Ashley,

Thanks for stopping by! I really enjoyed being in class with you – you sound like you have such an interesting job working on political campaigns!
I would be very excited to see an account planning course added to our curriculum. As for other courses, I wonder … there are definitely many skills that we use in IMC, including graphic design and also “project management” since many of us will be working on campaigns that coordinate many people and deliverables, and we must synchronize launches across various geographies. I think courses in these areas would make a great addition to our curriculum, but they might also make great “lifelong” learning. I’d love to hear what anyone else thinks!

:-) April
